09/03/2010 - MITIN 3rd Technical Meeting

For the third time, on 9th March 2010, MITIN partners met in Barcelona to discuss and assess the scientific and technical progress achieved during the first 18 months of life of MITIN project.  The  meeting was hosted by Antonio Zorzano (IRB Barcelona) in the facilities of Barcelona Science Park (PCB). The meeting was also attended by other project collaborators, as well as by different members of research community from IRB Barcelona and Barcelona Science Park.

Dr. Lars Juhl Jensen from University of Copenhagen (Denmark) (Read his imputs), accepted the invitation to attend the meeting in his quality of member of the Scientific Advisory Board. He started the scientific session with a talk on “Protein networks: A basis for large-scale data mining”. As an expert in computational & Systems Biology biology, his inputs to MITIN consortia were mainly related to the generation of the computational framework which is the objective of WP 1.

Among the meeting attendees it was the external reviewer appointed by the EC for assessing MITIN Interim Progress, Prof. Jerzy Duszinsky, Director of The Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology (Warsaw, Poland).

The meeting was splitted into two sessions: during the morning session, each partner presentation was followed by discussions between the partners, on scientific and technical problems. The day was ended with an overview on future work and on practical aspects related to the project interim (scientific and financial) reporting.

18/02/2010 - NEW RESULTS FOR TYPE 2 DIABETES, Antonio Zorzano

There may be hope for young adults suffering from type 2 diabetes, according to new research. Writing in the journal Diabetes Care, the researchers from Ireland, Spain and Italy investigated how new mechanisms in muscle cells may elucidate severe insulin resistance in the body, and showed a reduced response to aerobic exercise in young obese patients with type 2 diabetes. The study's results are part of the DIABESITY ('Novel molecular drug targets for obesity and type 2 diabetes') project, funded under the 'Life sciences, genomics and biotechnology for health' Thematic area of the EU's Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) to the tune of EUR 11.6 million.
