Background
Antonio Zorzano, Head of the Program of Molecular Medicine at the IRB (2002-present), and Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Barcelona (1991-present). He has over 20 years of experience focusing on the molecular genetics and regulation of metabolic processes involved in glucose uptake and signalling, especially with application to type 2 diabetes and obesity and their therapeutic intervention. He has published more than 170 original articles and chapters and is author of a number of seminal papers, and he is co-inventor of 11 patents most of them under industrial exploitation. He was one of the first to elucidate the novel regulation of cellular glucose transporters by insulin, a critical finding, and he has discovered that proteins involved in mitochondrial dynamics have an impact on cellular metabolism.
